Egg Count 2007Dave 98 Lillian & Doris 114TOTAL 212Chicken InfoFor more information please visit some of the websites on our links page. PicturesWe have hundreds of pictures of our beloved chickens. I have included a few in our picture gallery. Chicken Profiles:DaveDave is a Light Sussex. She rules the roost and keeps Jenson in tow. She should lay approximately 260 eggs per year. Lillian & DorisLillian and Doris were re-homed on 10th March 2007 via the BHWT. It's early days yet but Lillian is already very inquisitive. Doris is a bit quieter but I'm sure she just needs to come out of her shell! |
ChickensYes we have chickens, Dave, Lillian and Doris. As of June 1st 2007 we have started feeding them organically and as we garden organically as well our eggs will very shortly be ORGANIC FREE RANGE EGGS - this is all possible due to money raised by the sale of the eggs, thank you. What came first?Well in our case it was definitely the chicken. We had to wait a long 5 months before we saw an egg. In September 2006 we bought our first chickens. This was after a summer long project to build a chicken coup and run from the three old sheds that Jamie's Dad pulled down in the spring. We bought 4 chickens, Dave, Gary, Jenson and Patrick; unfortunately Patrick did not make the first night and Gary died a month later. We will not be using the supplier again but will not name and shame them. (cause we're not like that). Anyway on a more cheerful note Dave and Jenson have gone from strength to strength after a long period of sneezes and runny noses and 5 months since we got the chickens (February 2007) Dave laid her first egg! On the 10th March 2007 we gained a couple more hens, Lillian and Doris. It was a chicken rescue! We collected our two hens, they were 2 of 400 that were being rescued that weekend. After a short journey to Our Bungalow the chickens were ready to meet Jenson and Dave. None of the chickens seemed too bothered by each other but it was a bit strange for Dave and Jenson who had to share their coop. We kept them apart initially and overnight to prevent any bullying, and on Sunday gave them the run of the Garden. It was an eventful day from the start at 6am when Jamie let them out (Doris had already laid an egg) through to 18:20 when we had to put Doris and Lillian to bed as they wanted to stay in the Garden all night!
You can see Lillian has ventured out of the coop and is eating some corn. Doris is still in the coop but is keeping a close eye on Lillian. Doris finally came out of the coop about an hour before dusk around 5pm
Many thanks to Jean and all those involved at the BHWT. A very dedicated professional and caring bunch of people all with the interest of the chickens at the forefront of their minds. They do a great job, support them in any way you can. Please visit their website: The Battery Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) EggsWe have 2-3 eggs laid every day and you can see the current count at the top of the page. We have been giving away our surplus stock to potential customers, they love them. Shortly we'll be selling them to raise a bit of money towards the chicken feed and accommodation. If you have any questions about our chickens or chickens in general, email us at chickens@ourbungalow.co.uk and we will try and answer your questions. But please don't ask us what came first the chicken or the egg? as we have answered this one above! |
